It’s Not Discrimination, It’s Just Free Speech!
By Fred Pastry | Dealer staff writer    Wed, Oct 12, 2005

" "MASON - The Pleasure Inn Tavern's owner Tom Ullum is sticking to his guns on the “For Service Speak English” sign that sits in front of his bar window.

Ullum claims, “we get Mexicans in here all the time, and I don't discriminate."  Of course he can’t quite remember the last time a Hispanic entered his bar since the sign went up.

According to Ullum, he just has a sense of humor.  “Why every Friday night I have a St. Rita’s alumni happy hour,” says Ullum.  “It’s a real hoot seeing those deafs and mutes trying to order a beer.  It keeps me and my buddy Jim Freeze rolling on the ground for hours.  Ultimately, they just end up ordering one beer and then stomping off.  Of course them mutes sure have a funny way of signing 'one'.”

Antonio Ramírez doesn’t seem to mind Ullum’s use of free speech.  “Each time I see it, I just remind him that the sign fell off his wife again.”

In related news, the makers of Dos Equis and Corona have decided to stop service to the Pleasure Tavern Inn unless he “hable español.”
